Belcora · A Creative Mess · Philosophy

Most people think the mess is the problem. It isn’t. The mess is just what an operation looks like when real humans are running it, and real humans are holding more than any system was designed for.

The relationship with the mess is the problem. The belief that it has to be hidden before anything can get better. The apology that comes before the ask for help. That’s where things actually get stuck.

A creative mess isn’t a failure state.
The philosophy

It’s what every functional business looked like before someone sat down and built the structure around it. The structure doesn’t come first. The mess does, and a good system works with that instead of against it.

Businesses held together with duct tape and bubble gum aren’t held together that way because nobody cared.

They’re held together that way because the person running them was too busy doing the work to stop and build the thing that would make the work easier.

The standard

That gap is not a character flaw. It’s a design problem, and design problems are solvable.

The systems I build are built to survive the people who built them. Not because those people are leaving, but because knowledge that lives only in one person’s head isn’t really a system at all. It’s a liability with a human face on it.

When the structure is right, someone new can walk in, pick up where you left off, and the work doesn’t skip a beat.

That’s the standard everything here is built to.
